To create is JOY. To create for others gives purpose to that joy.
My mom could play the piano so beautifully. She had such passion and you could tell with each note how she loved to play. It was such a gift she gave to herself and to others the joy of listening to her beautiful music. After teaching all day she would come home to lesson plans, then dinner, than an evening of piano playing that most nights she played she would lull us to sleep. That feeling I got from watching and listening to her, I wanted that feeling of loving something so much that it carried you through your life and brought you such joy.
I graduated with a BFA Bachelor of Fine Arts. My first art job was drawing fruits and vegetables for a small Publishing company in Kansas City Mo. After a few years doing computer work at hallmark cards- I became a stay at home mom. returning to work I began doing murals in the KC area. Moved back to my home town Mexico Mo. after the birth of our second child. There I worked with a designer in Columbia painting everything under the sun. Walls, furniture doors. anything My designer wanted I created it. he moved away and I was on my own to discover what is next. I continued to do murals raise a family and start to paint for myself getting commission work in Missouri. The experience of working with local designers got me to think outside of the box and grab any form of material for a canvas.
Creating art is my JOY.
I found that JOY as an artist. My music was with a brush-silent but for some who appreciate my work moves them just the same. There is nothing better than watching another person look at your art and have it speak to them. So much, that it becomes a lovely tune in their head.
I work with acrylic mostly because I have found comfort in it, why do anything else. I love texture and layers when I am creating for myself in an abstract form. Though when i do commissions I tend to be tighter. The subject matter or the material I use seems to decide for me where it is to go. Though I might not be a musician like my mom, I do let the tunes of my favorite music inspire the brush as it touches the canvas.
I think as an artist or in any creative profession you have that go
to subject. I would find time to go to the studio and I wouldn’t
know what to paint I would just start and the angels would come
forth. I have had loss in my life and being able to paint something
that brings remembrance and joy is what lead to the Angel series.
The canvas I use to create my Angels with mostly is old weathered
cedar shingles. We live in an old 1890’s simplified Georgian style
home here in Missouri. We had to get a new roof in the hottest
summer ever! As the wood fell like rain I discovered a new long and
naturally aged canvas. I pleaded with the roofers to be gentle. They
were to the best of their ability-I did days upon days of dumpster
diving and at the end of the day we had piles of old wood in our
driveway. After a good cleaning the cedar wood smells delightful
,and the odd shapes make for an interesting canvas .
Who doesn't dream of owning an old building with character to use as a studio. My husband and I own an old Historic building on the square of the town I grew up in Mexico, Missouri.
I call it Color Me Bleu Studio.
